ABOUT GILI ISLAND

It’s true the Gilis do have a lot of coral, that’s why they have so much fish, and their blue coral is fomaus in its own right. The Gilis also have the odd wrect or two and water of the clear and blue variety but more that 3,500 species of fish is the real attraction.

Most divers want to see sharks. Generally within a day’s diving,  the reef sharks, which have no interest in humans, are spotted. You’ll also see manta ray, barracuda, green turtle, clown fish and Moray eel, (none dangerous).

The orange and white stride clown fist, the brightly colored parrot fish and the majestic Moorish idol also form a part of moving, living beauty. Two species of turtle, the Grand turtle and the Hawksbill, make their home in these rich waters, and although they are on dive and snorkeling trips. And of course there is the stationary life, the beautiful coral reeft themselves, colonies of living organism which are continuously growing and building magnificently shaped for the marine life to live among.

One Gili has a hill. Look down on a sleepy township reminiscent of turn_of_the_century south sea island settlements written about by Somerset Maugham, extolling the charms of the far east   island mystique . In the distance , volcanic Mt Rinjani rises majestically. Rice fields sweep in a gentle slope to the palm fringed coastline with its golden beaches. A little off the mainland is another island ringed by its own sandy necklace while sailing ships rest at anchor in peaceful bays to complete the scene. The only sound is that of the waves and the sea breeze.

Off the North_West coast of Lombok, about 20 kms north of Senggigi, can be found the trio of islands as THE GILIS,Gili Air, Gili Meno and Gili Trawangan. All have spectacular white sandy beaches, sparkling blue water and are encircled by beautiful coral reefs containing the very rare blue coral and thousands of species of marine life. Snorkeling and divers flock to these islands to indulge in an underwater fantasy.

Throughout the day public boats leave from Bangsal, on the North West coast  of Lombok to ferry passengers to the islands but it is also possible to charter a boat from there and inSenggigi as well, to take you to your chosen island or for island hopping.

There are no cars or motorbikes on any of these islands just CIDOMOS (horse drawn carts), and bicycles so the peace and quiet, make it a pleasure to stay here. Another way to see the island is to take a walk around them on the sandy pathways. Or learn to ride a horse and take guided rides around Trawangan! And don’t forget to climb the hill on Trawangan for spectacular sunrises and sunsets!

Gili Trawanggan has a reputation as being the “party island” and it has a host of other attractions. The beaches invite visitor for swimming, snorkeling, sunbathing or just lazing around chatting to the locals under the shady trees.

Accommodation ranges from very classy to cheap basic lodgings. Restaurants and warungs are in abundance and also cater for all tastes and butget. Many of these host nighttime parties which start late and go on until they are finished.

The Pasar Seni is a good shoping spot for souvenirs and necessities and there are quite a few places offering internet access. Dive companies abound, catering for all levels of divers and in many languages.it is posible for snorkllers to accompany dive trips off the island. For activites such as Water_skiing, try some of the dive companies. Glass_bottomed boatscan also be hired for viewing the  marine life and the fantastic coral.

Trawangan is home the gili Eco trust which invloves the dive companies and the  local communtiy working together to preserve and inprove thr marine envioremen around the islands.
